NORTH AMERICAThe Totem PoleThe totem pole is from North America, where the culture of the Indians there was to carve wooden poles which told a symbolic story about the particular tribe's history. The pole is the work of a descendant of the Haida Indians from British Columbia in Canada. The story which this pole tells is as follows. THE STORY OF SALMONOne day, while a hunting party was having a meal alongside a stream, a supernatural man came out of the woods and walked towards them. "Come join us, share our meal," the hunters said. The supernatural man sat and listened to their stories for a while. Then he began to eat. He found the food to be delicious and asked, "what is this food? Where did it come from?" "We got it from an eagle," they answered. "He called it Salmon, and said it lives far far away, in a lake owned by a beaver." "This food is so good it must be shared by all," the supernatural man said. Then he transformed himself into an eagle and flew away. Deep into the woods he flew, searching for this lake that was owned by the beaver. Finally he found the lake and took Salmon, and one by one he filled all the rivers, streams, lakes, and the ocean with this wonderful food. This is how we got the Salmon.
