AUSTRALIAThe Boomerang and KangarooThe boomerang is a weapon created by the Aborigines of Australia. The boomerang was used to kill the kangaroo, an animal providing a source of food for the Aborigines. The traditional 'x-ray' style of painting, as done by an Aborigine, decorates the boomerang displayed here. The kangaroo is an indigenous marsupial of the Australian continent. Interlude - The FountainThis fountain is called 'the fountain of the birds', as it is decorated with bird designs on Italian tiles, a blue ceramic bird from the Dominican Republic, some brass birds from England, and a bronze bird from Czechoslovakia. The fragments are mainly modern items, but a few are more than 500 years old. (N.B. Guide to have visitors GUESS!). The stone man is over 500 years old, and is an Indian pre-Columbian artifact from the Dominican Republic. It may have been a religious artifact or a tool. Next to it are two Indian pottery fragments from the same period. Also of interest is the coat of arms of Hungary, next to the brass bird statue. The green in the lower right section represents the original three parts of the capital Budapest - Buda, O'buda and Pest. The cross above the hills is the,' cross of King Stephen, the saint who brought Christianity to Hungary a thousand years ago. The crown is symbolic of Hungarian statehood, and the real crown can be seen in the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. Ferenc Ra'ko'cz, in May 1703, started a successful insurrection against the Emperor, and his flag had the design features which are adopted in the left portion of the coat of arms. The next stop on the tour, will help explain how coats of arms originated.
